The Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors (EBPHI) sets the national exam: 200 questions in four hours, with a pass at 500 on a scale of 200 to 800.
EBPHI's exam pages, checked on
- Where it is used
- EBPHI says 35 states use it for home inspection licensing.
- Length
- 200 multiple-choice questions, 25 of them unscored pretest questions, in four hours.
- Pass mark
- 500 on a scale of 200 to 800. The pass point is not set on a curve.
- Fee and retakes
- $225 per test in most states and in Canada. Confirm the fee when you register. Fees are not refundable, each retake needs its own fee, and a retake waits 30 days.
- Where to sit it
- At a PSI or Pearson VUE test center, booked in advance online or by phone. The provider depends on your state, and some states name their own contracted administrator. Check your state's rules before you book.
- After you pass
- Passing does not by itself license you. Regulatory bodies have further requirements to meet before they license you.
- Veterans
- A veteran who passes may be reimbursed through GI Bill benefits, on form VBA-22-0803-ARE.
