Who registers
The Department of Safety and Professional Services, which issues a registration, not a license.
Pre-registration
40 hours of instruction, at least 20 of them hands-on.
National exam
The National Home Inspector Examination, administered by EBPHI. An applicant need not pass it before applying.
Wisconsin exam
The Wisconsin exam has two parts, the Wisconsin statutes and rules and principles and procedures. The statutes and rules part covers Chapter 440 and has a passing score of 85 percent.
Out-of-state applicants
The department registers an applicant who is registered or licensed in good standing as a home inspector in another state, if that state's requirements meet or exceed Wisconsin's. The applicant also passes the Wisconsin exam, shows that registration or license, and gives the department documentation about any pending criminal charge or conviction.
Continuing education
40 hours each biennium, with no course pre-approval. The reporting period runs from December 15 of an even-numbered year through December 14 of the next even-numbered year.
