The Home Inspection Advisory Committee, under the State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, licenses home inspectors in New Jersey.

- Who licenses
- The Home Inspection Advisory Committee, under the State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
- Who can apply
- Citizenship is not required, and neither is a Social Security number. Applicants with undocumented status are eligible.
- Education and field training
- An approved course of 180 hours from a school, including at least 40 hours of unpaid field-based training inspections under a licensed home inspector's direct supervision, which the school provides.
- National exam
- Pass the national home inspector examination.
- Insurance
- Errors and omissions insurance of at least $500,000 per occurrence.
- Application
- Submit a written application and the application fee to the office of the State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
- Renewal
- Every two years.
- During inspections
- Carry the identification card the Committee issues, showing your name, photograph, license number and signature. Advertising other than radio and television must show the words Home Inspector License Number with your number, and a business street address, not a post office box.
- Out-of-state applicants
- If you hold a valid license from another state, a U.S. possession or the District of Columbia, with standards the Committee finds substantially equivalent, the Committee issues you a New Jersey license on payment of the fee and a written application.
