Indiana home inspector license
The Home Inspectors Licensing Board, run by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, licenses home inspectors, and an applicant needs 60 hours of board-approved training, the national exam and general liability insurance.

- Who licenses
- The Home Inspectors Licensing Board, run by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.
- Who can apply
- A high school diploma or GED, and completion of a board-approved training course. You submit the course completion certificate with your application.
- Education
- At least 60 hours of board-approved training, including at least 40 hours of classroom training and at least 12 hours of practical experience. Practical experience is on-site inspection work, or hands-on or visual defect recognition in a lab.
- National exam
- The National Home Inspector Examination of the Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors. You must pass it before you are licensed, and you submit your original score report.
- Insurance
- General liability insurance of at least $100,000 from an insurer authorized in Indiana. The policy lists the state as an additional insured. The board gets at least ten days' written notice before it is cancelled or not renewed.
- Application fee
- $50, non-refundable.
- Renewal
- Licenses renew every two years, by October 1 of odd-numbered years. Renewal requires your continuing education and proof of liability insurance.
- Continuing education
- At least 32 hours in each renewal period. Hours do not carry over to the next period.
- Out-of-state applicants
- Two routes. By reciprocity, you apply with verification of every license you hold or have held in any state, territory or country, your education, a passing national exam score report, your insurance and the $50 fee. As a nonresident, the board may license you once you file a written consent to actions arising from your business in Indiana and agree to service of process in Indiana.
