Home inspector certification

InterNACHI certification, the CPI, needs an InterNACHI membership at $49 a month or $499 a year; ASHI's ACI is a separate route.

Who grants it
InterNACHI grants the Certified Professional Inspector (CPI). ASHI grants the ASHI Certified Inspector (ACI).
Getting the CPI
Join InterNACHI, pass its online Inspector Examination, and complete its Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice courses. Its twelve required courses are due within the first year after you join. If you have never done a fee-paid inspection, submit four mock inspection reports for review.
What the CPI costs
Membership is $49 a month, which you can cancel at any time, or $499 a year. The exam and the twelve required courses are free.
Keeping the CPI
Complete 24 hours of continuing education a year, and pass the online exam at 80% or better every three years. Cancelling membership ends the certification.
Compared with a license
InterNACHI says its certification goes above and beyond regional licensing.
Getting the ACI
Pass the National Home Inspector Examination; complete at least 250 fee-paid home inspections under ASHI's Standards of Practice; submit five reports for verification; follow ASHI's Code of Ethics; and earn 20 ASHI CE credits a year.
What the ACI costs
A $449 application fee. ASHI membership dues are $499 a year.
Membership levels
The ACI is ASHI's top membership level and requires completing the Associate and Inspector levels.
The ACI and a license
The ACI does not replace a license. Where a state requires one, ASHI's Inspector level requires keeping it.
