Montana home inspector license
The Montana Department of Labor & Industry licenses home inspectors through its Home Inspector Program, and an applicant needs 40 hours of approved instruction, membership in a national home inspection association and errors and omissions insurance of at least $125,000.

- Who licenses
- The Montana Department of Labor & Industry, Employment Standards Division, through its Home Inspector Program. Since January 1, 2026, home inspectors hold a license. Active registrations were converted to licenses on that date.
- Education
- 40 hours of comprehensive home inspection instruction approved by the department. You submit the completion certificate with your application.
- National association
- Membership in a national home inspection association, with proof of membership. The department recognizes any national association and lists ASHI, InterNACHI and the North American Association of Home Inspectors.
- Insurance
- Errors and omissions insurance of at least $125,000, with proof submitted.
- Fees
- The application fee is $80. The renewal fee is $80.
- Renewal
- A license is renewed every two years, on its anniversary date. Renewal opens 60 days before it expires.
- Continuing education
- Not required.
- Out-of-state applicants
- Send official license verification from each state or jurisdiction where you hold or have held a professional license of any type. The department's substantial equivalency determinations for home inspectors include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee and Washington.
