# New Hampshire home inspector license

The Board of Home Inspectors, in the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification, licenses home inspectors, and no one may conduct a home inspection in New Hampshire without its license.

<dl>

<dt>Who licenses</dt>
<dd>The Board of Home Inspectors, in the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification.</dd>

<dt>Who can apply</dt>
<dd>At least 18 years old, with a high school diploma or its equivalent, and an authorization for a state police criminal history check, submitted to the Office.</dd>

<dt>Education</dt>
<dd>At least 80 hours of board-approved education covering the heating, cooling, plumbing, electrical, structural, foundation, roof, exterior and interior components, and site aspects of a residential building of up to four units.</dd>

<dt>National exam</dt>
<dd>The national home inspector examination, created and graded by the Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors, taken on a computer at a national test center.</dd>

<dt>Insurance</dt>
<dd>Proof of liability insurance with your application and with each renewal. The proof names the insurer, the certificate holder, the category and minimum amounts of coverage, and the cancellation policy.</dd>

<dt>Fees</dt>
<dd>$200 for the application and $200 for each two-year renewal. A late renewal costs a 20 percent fee for each month it is late.</dd>

<dt>Renewal</dt>
<dd>Every two years, by written application and the renewal fee, before the license expires.</dd>

<dt>Continuing education</dt>
<dd>20 hours of board-approved continuing education in each two-year period, including one hour on building regulations. The board's page says CE Broker tracking is now mandatory for home inspectors.</dd>

<dt>Out-of-state applicants</dt>
<dd>If you are licensed or registered in another state that grants reciprocity to New Hampshire residents, and its requirements are substantially equivalent to or higher than New Hampshire's, you apply on the board's form and pay the application fee. The verification of your license or exam comes directly from that state to the board.</dd></dl>
