# Connecticut home inspector license

The Department of Consumer Protection issues Connecticut's home inspector license, with the Home Inspection Licensing Board, and an applicant first holds an intern permit, completes 100 home inspections under a licensed supervisor and passes the Department's exam.

<dl>

<dt>Who licenses</dt>
<dd>The Department of Consumer Protection issues licenses. The Home Inspection Licensing Board sits within the Department.</dd>

<dt>Intern permit</dt>
<dd>A high school diploma or equivalent, a completed board-approved training program, and a supervisor who is a licensed Connecticut home inspector in good standing.</dd>

<dt>Inspections</dt>
<dd>100 home inspections under a licensed home inspector, with the supervisor's signed logs submitted with your application. Direct supervision covers at least the first ten inspections.</dd>

<dt>Exam</dt>
<dd>A written examination the Department administers. If you have passed the National Home Inspector Examination, include its score report with your application.</dd>

<dt>Fees</dt>
<dd>The application fee is $40 and the initial license fee is $200, a total of $240.</dd>

<dt>Insurance</dt>
<dd>Chapter 400f of the General Statutes and the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies, 20-491, set no insurance requirement for home inspectors.</dd>

<dt>Out-of-state applicants</dt>
<dd>Reciprocity. The Department issues a license to a holder of a valid license from another state with standards substantially equivalent to or exceeding Connecticut's, on a written application and a $100 fee. Include a complete copy of your original state license application, showing how you qualified, and a copy of the statutes and regulations under which you were licensed.</dd>

<dt>Renewal</dt>
<dd>Licenses and intern permits expire on June 30 of odd-numbered years. The renewal fee is $250 for a license and $200 for an intern permit.</dd>

<dt>Continuing education</dt>
<dd>Home inspectors take at least 20 continuing education hours in each two-year period, including one course of at least three classroom hours in current home inspection legislation, licensing laws and regulations. The requirement does not apply until after your first license renewal. The cycle window runs from April 1 of an odd-numbered year to March 31 two years later. Complete the hours three months before the renewal deadline.</dd></dl>
