# Radon certification

Some states license or certify radon testers themselves, and two national programs, NRPP and NRSB, certify them as well.

## Check your state’s rule

Illinois, Pennsylvania and Florida each set their own rules for radon testers.

- Illinois licenses testers. The first step is an IEMA-OHS approved qualification course. The state approves the NRPP and NRSB exams for its license.
- Pennsylvania’s Radon Certification Act requires the Department of Environmental Protection to establish, by regulation, a certification program for persons conducting radon gas and radon progeny testing.
- Florida requires a business that charges for radon testing to be state certified. A certified individual must work for a certified business.

Check your state’s health or environmental agency for its rule. EPA requires states that receive indoor radon grants to list only radon service providers credentialed through a state process or by one of two national programs: NRPP and NRSB.

## NRPP

NRPP certifies a Radon Measurement Professional (RMP) for two years.

- Complete a 16-hour RMP initial training course, then pass the NRPP Measurement Professional exam. The exam is 3 hours and costs $175.
- Certification costs $275 initial and $275 renewal for RMP-Standard, or $325 and $325 for RMP-Analytical.
- To certify with a standard device, such as a charcoal test kit, register the device type.
- To certify with an analytical device, such as a CRM, complete a device performance test and submit proof of calibration. Calibrate each analytical device once a year.
- Renew every two years. Each two-year cycle needs 12 hours of continuing education.

## NRSB

NRSB certifies a Radon Measurement Specialist (RMS).

- Complete 16 hours of NRSB-approved classroom training, then pass the NRSB RMS knowledge-based exam.
- The NRSB fee for the RMS is $125 a year, or $200 for two years.
- Complete 8 hours of NRSB-approved continuing education in each certification year.
- At renewal, a CRM needs no new proficiency test if its model has not changed since your last renewal or initial certification. A CRM or electret ion chamber needs an up-to-date calibration certificate.
